Photoshop a Paper Texture from Scratch then Create a Grungy Web Design with it!4
    34 shares
This year has seen a big increase in grungey / textured / hand-drawn styled website designs. By nature I tend to design a cleaner look myself, but I thought I'd try my hand at grunge today and write up a tutorial on creating a simple paper texture from scratch in Photoshop then marrying it with a web layout to create a neat design. Then later this week we'll take this same web design and I'll show you how you can take remixing even further than just changing backgrounds and colour schemes, that in fact you can change the entire style of a design. But first let's make our paper texture site!Read More…

    Everything you Know is Wrong!200x200
Everything is changing. This weekend, I read a very interesting book: "Everything You Know About CSS is Wrong". The book illustrates how, now that IE has passed the ACID 2 test, we can finally begin to build our websites the proper ways. Up until now, we've been forced to implement hacks to form the perfect layout - absolute positioning, precarious floats, etc. But that's all beginning to change! I'll show you how in twenty minutes. Top 10 Web Dev Blunders of 2008Failwhale prev
It's inevitable: We're all going to screw up at least once when it comes to the highly volatile world of web development. Downtime, stupid UI mistakes, miscues on communication, bad product launches... they happen to the best of us. Literally. Over the past year, many of the top websites in the world have committed serious development no-no's. It's almost comforting to know that the best development teams in the world aren't perfect either. Instead of viewing this article as a way to bring down the big guys a peg or two, let's look upon it as a teaching tool. Learning is all about making mistakes and finding ways to correct them. It's nice when we can occasionally learn from other's mistakes, instead of screwing up ourselves. Here's a list of the 10 biggest "Whoops!" moments of 2008 in web development.Read More…

9 Information Design Tips to Make You a Better Web Designer3
    19 shares
It's probably the least glamourous part of web design, but information design is by no means the least important. Locating and consuming information is the quintessential web task, far surpassing buying, playing and communicating, all of which include a good portion of information design themselves. How users find and then avail themselves of all that information is affected by how it is structured and presented. Thus every web designer should be equipped to make qualified and informed decisions on just how to do this. Read More…

How to Create Sounds with the Jupiter 8V SynthThumb
    2 shares
Although Arturia’s Jupiter 8V admittedly isn’t a free synth, it is arguably one of the best analogue emulations on the market. If you are thinking about investing in a soft synth you could do a lot worse than picking up a copy of the 8V. Not only does the synth faithfully emulate the original Jupiter 8’s signature sound but its interface is also a great representation of the hardware. Arturia have not stopped there though, they have added some clever extensions of the original synth’s abilities allowing you to create sounds that just weren’t possible on the original instrument.Read More…
